Before you undertake any venture, it is wise to do initial planning. How are you going to run your business? Write a business plan. Think through all of the potential problems with running the business. Understand that you are fully responsible for the outcome of the business.

Remember the rule of cause and effect: If I do this, then what happens? And what does that cause? And what does that cause? Think at least 4 or 5 steps into the future, keeping a long-term perspective on you business.

Attainable, measurable goals are key

Develop business goals that are long-term, clearly defined and measurable. Divide your business into its components and create short term goals for each section. Be methodical. The time you invest in planning is far less expensive than the cost of engaging in a failed business.

Know your customers – and your prospects

Invest time in developing a marketing plan. Marketing is the entire process of selling product, from demographic research (who will buy), what they will buy (product selection), where they will buy (commercial location, street corner, school), to how they will they buy (cash, credit, check), and why they will buy (price, selection, color). A sale is the process of taking money and delivering product; marketing determines what you will sell.

In the vending machine business, management has to make these critical decisions. What will you sell, what kind of machines will you use, where do you set pricing, where will you sell? Our market is broken into two groups, each having different concerns. We have the account market – focusing on where to place machines – and the end user market, determining who will spend money and what will they buy. This article will discuss the account market, and the account sales process.

Plan for the unforeseeable

As much as we enjoy planning out sales, it’s also important to consider the impact that problems, issues and catastrophes could have on the business, things like:

  • Equipment destruction

  • Pricing decisions

  • Placement fees and bad placements

Like any business, vending machine operations can be enjoyable and profitable – provided you do your homework ahead of time.

Joe Nichols is the second-generation owner of A & M Vending Machine Sales, a family owned and operated business for over 40 years. A & M Vending Machine Sales ships new vending machines and used vending machines all around the world. Find a full-service vendor at the vending operators directory.

Event Suppliers: They Can Make Or Break An Event

You have to be careful when you are trying to plan a great event. You need to make sure that you are using the right vendors that are there to help you.  There are many different people out there that want to take your money and you need to make sure that you are protecting yourself your clients and your event if you decide to use them.

Planning the perfect event for any reason is something that anyone wants to do.  It is not always easy, however it is something that you have to take seriously because you will want to make sure that you are getting the most for your money. You want to get the most for your money, but yet still put on a great event.

Shop around for prices on what you need. For example, if you need fifty table clothes, don't get them at the first store that you come to, call at least three suppliers and ask their prices on that same item.

That item could be just £1 cheaper at another store, and shipped free, compared to paying £1 more for each table clothe and to have to pay shipping as well.

Look for items that you can reuse at other events. For example, go back to the back to the table clothe order. Will you be able to launder the items, cheap, and reuse them again at another event? This is a good idea is you are going to be an event planner or put on a lot of different events in the next few months or years.  Continued Below.....

Event Planning Continued.....

While it could be a little more costly up front instead of using paper, you have to look at the number of times you can use these table clothes, and the price you would pay each time if you were to use paper. Remember, savy affairs and events are not the place for paper anyway, so you might end up buying paper table clothes for four events, and then still have to purchase those linens for another event.

A supplier can make or break your event, just by not showing up. You need to keep a list of supplies, that are local so that just in case you find your supplier doesn't ship or doesn't show, you can purchase what you need, without waiting. You always need a backup plan. For example, the 125 paper table clothes you orders online that are blue and green, can you get them anywhere else locally, within fifty miles, even if it costs more?

If your supplier doesn't show, or doesn't ship and it is the day of the event, you need to send someone to your backup, and get what you need. Don't let anyone hold you up from being successful.

Hold people to their contracts, to what you ordered. If you ordered 100 green cloth napkins and 40 black napkins for centre pieces, and your shipped the products but in backwards amounts, call the supplier. Tell them you want a big discount or you are going to refuse to accept the shipment. Make your point known. If you have to put up with items that are wrong, then get a discount; get money back on the overall deal. Make it or break it, that is all a name of the game. You can be strong with vendors, remember you are paying their bill and you don't have to pay for what is right. Make the vendor or supplier work for your money.

You should avoid vendors and suppliers who are always running late. Avoid suppliers that do not deliver what you order, and in the quantities that you always order. Keep a running list of suppliers that will put you on top of everything from forks, to tables, to food, to lighting and candles. Always know where you bought the item last, and at least one other supplier for that item so your events will 'go off' without a hitch.

Life Coaching Business

Coaches and Consultants: Should You Work For Free?

There are separate, yet equally valid points to consider in the working for free issue. Many people believe that working for free is sometimes essential to the start up and or growth of a company. This group of people says that working for free allows your skills and your name to get out there, and establishes you more as experienced in your field. It can also be an excellent way to generate word of mouth about your business, just as many startup companies give away free samples.

In the beginning, you may need to work for free, either as an intern in a company or as a volunteer. These can be valuable ways to gain experience and connections. Many writers work for free, in order to build up their ‘clips’ and gain a name for themselves. Working for free can be a good marketing tool.

Others believe that you should not give away your services for free. This may set a bad precedent. People often ascribe a value to certain things, and the value they base on things can often be based on the amount they paid for them.

Another argument is that it becomes difficult to start charging for services – it’s hard to go from a free or very inexpensive service to a service that actually charges your market value, and people you had counted on as clients may leave. Thus, there are those who say you should start out charging your set rate.

If you feel a need to give away your services, perhaps because your business is as an event planner and you haven’t got enough references, you can always have your services auctioned off for a charity. This can make it clear: you normally charge, but in this instance, you are donating your fee to a charity. This is also good for the charity.

Whether or not you work for free is your own decision.

Working for free is something to consider as part of an overall business plan and marketing campaign, and thus, the decision and the factors affecting the decision will be different for each coach or consultant. If you choose to give away your services for free, be sure you have a plan for when you are going to start charging.

Perhaps let clients know that the first session is free, and after that, it is your regular price per session.

The choice of whether or not to do work for free is just one of the many decisions you will make in becoming a coach or a consultant. Be sure to choose a path which you will enjoy and find fulfilling.

Market Business

Using a Website to Market Your Business

There are many different ways to advertise your business on the Internet. Placing banner ads, orchestrating an email marketing campaign and tactfully mentioning your business on industry related forums and message boards are just a few of the popular options for Internet marketing. Another Internet marketing strategy involves creating and advertising a website to promote your business. You can use your website in a number of ways.

Some of these ways include providing more information about your business and the products or services you offer, letting potential customers know how to reach you and even selling your products and services via the website. This article will highlight the advantages of using a website to market your business and will outline some of the ways the website can be useful.

One great advantage to using a website to market your business on the Internet is that you can place descriptions and photos of the products or services your business offers. This is important because many consumers use the Internet when researching products and services. Having an online presence gives your business an advantage over the competition because consumers are much more likely to select your products or services over the products and services offered by your competitors who do not advertise online.

Another advantage to marketing your business on a website is you can use the website to not only market but also sell your products directly. Again this can give you an edge over the direct competition. Consumers who use the Internet to research products and services are often very anxious to make their purchases and they would be more inclined to select a retailer or service providers who offer the opportunity to purchase products or services online over a retailer or service provider who only allows for purchase in a store or via phone.

Still another advantage to using a website to market your business is the ability to reach a large, worldwide audience. The Internet essentially knows no boundaries and advertising on a website means the business owner can reach competitors around the world instead of being limited to their general location. Advertising via other medium such as television, radio and the print media is somewhat limited and may only reach potential customers in a relatively small geographic area.

Another advantage to using a website to market your business is the Internet is available 24 hours a day around the world. This essentially offers you a storefront which is open 24 hours a day. While your competitors may be limited to their regular business hours, your website will enable you to reach your customers at any hour of the day. This is especially important for reaching potential customers in other time zones and for reach customers in your own area who are simply too busy to shop for products or services like the ones you offer during regular business hours. Many potential customers work long hours and appreciate the ability to research and shop online after hours.

One final advantage to using a website to market your business is you can actually generate a profit from your website in other ways than through sales to customers. You can also use your website to generate income by selling advertising space to other business owners who are marketing their own products and services on the Internet.

However, care should be taken when advertising on your website. First of all you should not sell advertising space to direct competitors. This is important because this may cause you to lose potential business if potential customers opt to purchase product or services from competitors who advertise on your website.

An ideal advertiser is one who offers products and services which do not directly compete with your own products or services but would be of interest to your potential customers. You should also take care not to place too many advertisements on your website. This is important because too many advertisements may detract from your business and may cause you to lose potential customers.

Can You Sell Ideas to Others?

Best Business Ideas : Can You Sell Ideas to Others?

No matter what type of business you’re in or what position you hold, you must be able to sell your best business ideas to others.

Whether they be home business ideas or small business ideas, if you’re the owner, then you have to sell your ideas to your employees or your board of directors.  If you’re an employee of a business then you must be able to sell your ideas to your boss, your company, or your clients.  It seems that in this life, no matter whether it’s in business, relationships, or parenthood you had better be adept at selling your ideas to others.

It isn’t hard to master this procedure but it takes practice.  The first and most important rule of thumb is to remember that one’s credibility and power to make the desired changes must be earned.  Here are some specific points to remember:

Be absolutely positive that you understand every aspect related to your proposal.  If there are obstacles within your organisation to your idea, find a way around them before you make your suggestions.  Then when they are raised, you can come up with a solution.

Know who or what sections of your business may be affected negatively by your idea.  Then find a way to modify it so that the organisation can get all or most of the benefits without any parties getting hurt.Be aware of your own credibility.  Often, it’s the presenter more than what is presented that is judged.Limit the number of suggestions made.

This will increase your credibility if you’ve prioritised your business ideas before trying to sell them. When you want to be taken seriously, you must use the rules for developing influence.  The Four Rs; Role, Respect, Relationships, and Rhetoric.

Make sure your role is that of a clear advocate.  Gain the respect you need through hard work and dedication to your responsibilities.  Form alliances that are based on mutual respect and hard work.  Finally, know exactly what you are proposing and all the implications of your idea.

The ability to sell your best business ideas to others is a valuable asset to your life and understanding how it’s done is easy.  No matter whether you’re dealing with your peers, your business, your children, or your significant other – your ability to sell your idea will be used so hone this tool well.

Work From Home Franchise

Is A Work From Home Franchise Business Right For You?

If you're interested in opening your own business, you should definitely consider the potential rewards of a business that would allow you to work from home. A home based business offers an amazing level of autonomy, and there are a surprising number of work at home franchise opportunities. In this article we will discuss some of the pros and cons of working from home as well as some of the available home based business franchises.

Pros and cons of a home business:

One major advantage of home based business franchises is that the initial investment required is typically much lower than a traditional franchise. Work from home franchises are usually in the £15,000-£50,000 range. You can occasionally even find a work at home franchise for as little as £6,000.

Another advantage is that a home based business has very few overhead expenses. Of course you will have to maintain a home office, but your chief operating tools will be things such as a computer, telephone or fax machine. If you choose to employ one or two people, there would, of course, be some payroll.

Home based business franchises require you to stock little to no inventory, which is advantageous because it alleviates the responsibility of keeping up with an inventory system.

Many prospective franchisees find the lifestyle associated with working from home to be the key advantage. There are a number of work at home franchise opportunities that only require a part-time commitment to be successful. This provides franchisees with a great deal of flexibility in their schedules and often affords them more time to spend with their families. This flexible schedule also allows business owners to conduct business at times that are most convenient for them as opposed to adhering to the traditional "retail-style" hours of operation.

However, working at home does have some disadvantages, too. There is staggered revenue potential associated with these types of businesses. Because there is no walk-by traffic, home based businesses are dependent upon a loyal client base for repeat business.

As the owner of a home business, you will have limited exposure due to municipal law, which prohibits home based franchises from maintaining "street signage" on residential properties. You can get around this restriction if your home has been zoned for commercial use, but for the most part your business's exposure will depend on your ability to market it through various advertising media.

National advertising campaigns are not commonly associated with home based franchises. Normally, marketing the business is the sole responsibility of the franchisee, and this may limit the reach of your marketing campaign to your own town or city.

Finally, as a home-based franchisee, your business practice will be isolated. This can curtail the number of networking opportunities you will have. If you do not maintain an active and effective advertising campaign, you are likely to lose potential customers to any competitor who operates a street-front or retail business.

Available home based business franchises:
If you've weighed the pros and cons and decided that a home based franchise is right for you, you might consider some these franchise opportunities:

PosiGrip is a turnkey, home based franchise that offers its customers protection from dangerous slip-and-fall accidents. PosiGrip is a process that creates a tread design on almost any hard surface including tubs and showers. The process does not discolor or change the look or feel of floors or showers. It simply makes them safer. For an initial investment of £8,000-£10,000, you will receive training and support, national advertising and a complete marketing program. PosiGrip imposes no franchise or royalty fees on its franchisees.

Guard-A-Kid Child ID Systems is a franchise that allows the franchisee to choose working from home or from a mall kiosk. The services and products they provide their customers are essential for child safety. For example, a complete child ID and safety package that includes two wallet-size printed IDs, a large file-size ID and a CD-ROM containing all the child's information in digital format is available to patrons. The initial investment for this franchise is £19,900.

Your start-up kit will include numerous technological tools to ensure your success including a state-of-the-art laptop PC and an FBI-quality digital fingerprint scanner. Guard-A-Kid was included in Entrepreneur Magazine's Franchise 500 list and was also recently named one of the top 100 new franchises by Franchise Market Magazine.

You can even work from home in the travel industry. For example, Cruise Planners is a nationally recognized cruise planning agency, and they were ranked number one in their category in Entrepreneur Magazine's Franchise 500 for 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The initial investment required for this home based business franchise is $20,000. Franchisees in this system enjoy training programs, marketing and advertising programs, exclusive lead and website programs as well as the highest commission levels in the industry.

Final thoughts concerning home based businesses:

The possibilities for entrepreneurs seeking a work at home franchise opportunity are virtually limitless. You can see the diversity in available franchises just from the short list above, and it is a short list. Many other opportunities exist.

If you've done your research and concluded that a home based franchise business is for you, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a franchise to meet both your personal and your professional needs.
